Erythromycin is one of the most common antibiotics for acne treatment. This drug has the ability to kill acne-causing bacteria as well as impede bacterial growth by decreasing the essential proteins required to support bacterial survival in the body. Additionally, erythromycin possesses anti-inflammatory properties that reduce the redness in acne lesions. A potent antibiotic for acne treatment, this drug should be taken with food and usual dosage is 250-500mg twice a day.

Antibiotics for Acne Treatment: Tetracycline
Tetracycline is one of the most popular antibiotics for acne treatment with usual dosing of 500mg twice a day, which is then decreased to 250mg twice a day if the drug shows positive results. High doses of tetracycline are prescribed for severe acne while low doses are given to treat less severe ones. Tetracycline must be taken on an empty stomach and it should not be given to children or pregnant women. Erythromycin may then be given as an alternative antibiotic for acne treatment.

Antibiotics for Acne Treatment: Doxycycline
This is given for more severe acnes and for those people who cannot tolerate or don’t respond to tetracycline or erythromycin. Usual starting dosage is 50-100mg twice a day and this should be taken with food to avoid experiencing nausea. It should be noted however that certain vitamins and minerals such as calcium, iron, and antacids counteract the antibiotic’s efficacy, decreasing its absorption rate. This antibiotic for acne treatment should not be taken by pregnant women and breastfeeding mothers alike.

Antibiotics for Acne Treatment: Minocycline
Monocycline is a derivative of tetracycline that helps reduce severe acne by approximately 60% on the average. The usual starting dosage for minocycline is 50-100 mg twice a day, preferably without food to maximize absorption of the drug. This antibiotic for acne treatment produces a side effect of skin pigmentation. In ofer to counteract this, you may take 500mg of Vitamin C twice a day.

Antibiotics for Acne Treatment: Clindamycin
Clindamycin is commonly used as a topical antibiotic for acne treatment although oral medication is also available with usual starting dose of 75-150mg twice a day. This drug works well as a topical treatment wherein works to reduce inflammation and redness.
Side Effects
Nausea, vaginal discharge, diarrhea, stomach upset, painful throat, dizziness, skin rash, itching, trouble in breathing, and yellowing of skin or eyes.
