Acne scars can be very humiliating. This is why science has come up with acne scar treatments to help you remove all those traces so you can finally start showing more confidence as you go out of your room.
Over the years, science has developed technologies to come up with different acne scar treatments and procedures. It is now time to embrace the medical breakthroughs science has created.
Acne creams are topical treatments mostly available over-the-counter. Acne creams are the first line of treatment among many people because these can be easily applied at home. There are a number of creams available in the market and these creams are composed of different components including vitamins, gels, natural ingredients, and botanical extracts. Some creams contain alpha hydroxyl acid, an ingredient that plays a role in removing the top layer of the skin thus bringing out the healthier skin found underneath.
Laser resurfacing is one of the most popular methods of removing acne scars. This procedure is done under local anesthesia and works by burning the top layers of the skin through beams of laser light. Laser treatment comes in different types including carbon dioxide (CO2), erbium(Er:YAG), and fractional laser skin resurfacing (Fraxel).
Punch techniques have different types:
Punch Excision – This involves surgically removing the acne scar by excising the scar through a punch tool followed by suturing the skin edges together.
Punch Excision with Skin Graft Replacement – This acne scar treatment involves excising the scar with a punch tool but instead of the suture, the area is patched with a punch skin graft taken from anywhere on the body, usually behind the ear.
Punch Elevation – This procedure is usually used to remove deep boxcar scars. It involves excising only the base of the scar while leaving the walls of the scar untouched. The cut base is then lifted to the surface of the skin.
Microdermabrasion is a non-invasive procedure which is done by partially or completely removing the top layer of the skin by light abrasion.
Subcutaneous incision, also called Subcision, works by separating the fibrous bands as with rolling scars. Performed under local anesthesia, this procedure involves excising the scar from the underlying tissue thereby permitting blood to fill the space underneath and clot. As a result, connective tissue will be formed from the clot, leveling it with the surface of the skin.
Cryosurgery involves freezing the scar with very cold liquid nitrogen in order to damage the scar or skin tissue. The dead tissue is then removed, leveling the area which was previously raised.
